What is a Fuel Managment System (FMS)?

A Fuel Management System (FMS) is a solution designed to monitor, control, and optimize fuel usage across a fleet, site, or business. It ensures that every litre of fuel is accounted for from storage to dispensing the main goal is to help businesses reduce fuel theft and wastage, track consumption, and improve operational efficiency, whether thats through automated processes or reducing the man hours required for manual dipping and deliveries.

Industries that benefit from FMS systems

Fuel management systems typically help industries like:

  • Mining

  • Agriculture

  • Marina's and Ports

  • Logistics

  • Airports

  • Construction

  • Government and Military

  • Fleet management

They all aim to answer these questions
  1. Who is using fuel?

  2. When and where has it been taken?

  3. How much is being used?

  4. What is being consumed? like Diesel, Adblue or Petrol (can also be calibrated for liquids, oils, water etc.)

  5. Why is it being used? such as job or project

When these key metrics are recorded a business can make more informed decisions on reducing waste, preventing fuel theft and stream-lining their operations.

How a Fuel Management System works

Fuel management systems can vary in complexity, sizes and performance. FMT's systems rely on the following:

  1. Fuel dispensing / pump control Modules that control the pump and log transactions such as the SmartFill

  2. User Identification Through tags, fobs, pin codes, RFID, Bluetooth and vehicle mounted devices

  3. Tank Monitoring Sensors that track fuel levels, deliveries and leaks. All calibrated to your location and tank. These are either wired through the SmartFill with a SmartDip Wired or standalone like the SmartDip Wireless.

  4. FMS Software Viewing all of data through an integrated system, this allows users to analyze, record and report on their consumption trends for all of their sites, vehicles and users.

Once the system is installed on your site or across your business you can set access restrictions, eliminate human error from manual reads and paper trails whilst removing unmonitored consumption.

Why we are one of the leading solutions

At FMT we create a fully integrated fuel and fluid ecosystem that goes from hardware to software and then support. With the goal of giving the business the ability to Control, Measure and Report on every drop of fuel or fluid.

Fuel Pump Recording through - SmartFill & OPT

SmartFill is our flagship product, the SmartFill allows you to directly to your pump and restricts users by PIN, RFID, or Vehicle Identification devices. Every transaction is logged and synced to your FMTdata portal. Even when it's offline it still records the transaction making it reliable and accountable. There's also the ability to measure up to 8 pumps at the same time.

The SmartFill OPT can also handle unattended site payments, in the case of Marinas, they setup accounts for their users to purchase fuel directly from the onsite fuel tank, this can be done without any workers on site. Making the whole processes seem-less and increases the operating hours for the business which in turn generates more revenue opportunities.

Automatic Tank Gauging - SmartDip and SmartDip Wireless

Our SmartDip tracks tank levels through a module within the SmartFill 3. The SmartDip records deliveries and consumption trends. Alerts can be set for low levels, deliveries or unusual usages. Helping you to automate and manage your onsite fuel tanks, the SmartDip can prevent operational downtime and manual dipping processes.

The SmartDip Wireless can be setup on remote tanks as it operates through solar and the 4G network, this is ideal for isolated locations, it has the same benefits of the wired version but is more focused on maintaining visibility of the tank and reducing labour for travelling to remote locations. Dips can be setup to read multiple times a day depending on your businesses goals but is restricted by the power obtained by solar. Which is why we advise where it's possible to go with the SmartFill 3 system paired with a wired SmartDip.
